The Golden Spike marked the moment of connection that lit up the transcontinental railroad. It was where east and west met. It was one of our country’s greatest what ifs. What if we traced a line across the United States by railroad, connecting people and places like never before? It was equal parts rolling the dice and rolling up the sleeves. Today, with this image in our eyes, we are asking our own questions of the future. What if we could give hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a dent in ending slavery, hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness?
